The Open Access movement recommends publishing scientific literature free of charge and accessible to everyone on the Internet. This recommendation applies to peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, conference communications, as well as technical reports, dissertations, theses and working documents.

Currently, the financing policies of the European Commission and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) require the availability, in open access, of scientific production resulting from R&D projects financed by these entities.

It should also be noted that both the European Commission, through the OpenAIRE portal, and the FCT, through the RCAAP portal, have monitoring mechanisms that ensure that the scientific production resulting from projects financed by them is available in open access. In this context, the RECIPP repository plays a fundamental role, as it allows teachers and researchers at the Polytechnic of Porto, including ISEP, to comply with funding requirements. Additionally, the repository is interoperable with the OpenAIRE and RCAAP portals.

There are two options for publishing in open access: golden way and green way.

Golden Open Access Publication

Currently, many peer-reviewed scientific journals already publish articles in open access. Generally, to cover the costs of publishing in open access, fees are charged to authors (APC – Article Processing Charges). Therefore, before selecting the journal in which you wish to publish in open access, you should consult the publication policies of the journal in question. The academic community at the Polytechnic of Porto, through B-on, has access to various discounts on APC – Article Processing Charges.

Green Open Access (Self-Archive)

In this option, access to scientific publications is made available freely and free of charge through deposit or archive in an institutional or thematic repository, after publication in a traditional journal. It should be noted that some publishers impose an embargo period on self-archiving the publication in a repository. On the Sherpa/Romeo platform you can consult the self-archiving policies of the vast majority of peer-reviewed scientific journals.
