The transformation of the electricity sector is currently facing major challenges in relation to the large-scale deployment of renewable energy. That is because end users increasingly assume the double-role of producers and consumers of electricity, injecting their entire electricity production or surplus electricity back into the grid, which jeopardizes the balance of the energy grid. In fact, management and balancing costs of the system are becoming increasingly large, which reflects in the tariffs paid by consumers and threatens the expansion of renewable energy.
Solutions based on technological advances in the ICT area ICT are allowing the implementation of Smart Energy Networks and innovative mechanisms of automated demand response and control, which offer significant potential to balance energy networks but still face major economic, legal and social barriers that hinders its full market adoption. In light of this, the Flexigy project proposes the development of a complete solution to overcome such critical barriers.
Flexigy was a national project funded by the National Innovation Agency, under grant number POCI-01-0247-FEDER-034067.
The participation of ISEP was led by members of the SoftCPS laboratory, working in the communication infrastructure and flexible scheduling of loads.
