DEMFLEX Project Drives Innovation in Renewable Energy Communities in Portugal and the UK

The Demonstration of AI-Enhanced Energy Flexibility for Microgrids with Connected Smart Homes (DEMFLEX) project began in May 2025.

DEMFLEX aims to accelerate the development and validation of advanced energy flexibility solutions for residential microgrids, contributing to the technological and commercial maturity of renewable energy communities across Europe.

Running until April 2027, the project will design, implement, and test AI-powered Community Energy Management systems in real-life demonstrators located in Portugal and the United Kingdom. These solutions enable the coordinated optimization of energy generation, consumption, storage, and sharing among interconnected households. By leveraging intelligent, data-driven technologies, DEMFLEX seeks to improve energy efficiency, enhance grid resilience, and support the transition towards more sustainable and flexible energy systems.

The DEMFLEX Portuguese consortium is formed by ISEP and Cleanwatts Digital, leveraging on a their long term partnership in multiple national and European project. ISEP, through its SoftCPS group is responsible for the development of the AI algorithms, being Cleanwatts Digital  responsible for the integration with its Living Lab.

The DEMFLEX operation (COMPETE2030-FEDER-01657200 – 19215) is supported by the Innovation and Digital Transition Programme (COMPETE 2030), under Portugal 2030, and co-financed by the European Union.
