The Way4SafeRail project, developed in partnership between the iBuilt team at ISEP, FEUP, Evoleo, and Infraestruturas de Portugal, aimed to strengthen railway transport safety and reliability through the integration of advanced infrastructure asset monitoring technologies.
The solution was based on the development of an intelligent wayside monitoring system with analytical and predictive capabilities, designed to support operators and maintenance managers in the early detection of anomalies and the mitigation of in-service failure risks.
The developed service integrated, among others, the following components:
· Wayside sensing systems, dedicated to monitoring critical parameters of rolling stock (such as wheels, axles, and suspension systems), enabling continuous data collection during railway operation;
· Advanced data analysis methodologies, for the identification of single and multiple damage, using artificial intelligence, specialized sensing (accelerometers and strain gauges), and sensor fusion techniques, allowing the automatic classification of component degradation states;
· Application validated on different types of rolling stock, demonstrating the versatility and robustness of the proposed solution.
