Ferreira was born in 1971 and has a MSc (1997) and a PhD (2005) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto. Since 1996 he works at the Department of Computer Engineering, School of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Currently he is the director of the SoftCPS group and subdiretor of the Master on Critical Computing Systems Engineering.
