Briefing

José Tenreiro Machado from ISEP, Engineering School of the Polytechnic of Porto, is one of the most cited Portuguese researchers in the world.

On Tuesday, November 19, the list of the most cited researchers in the world was launched and a researcher from the Polytechnic of Porto is included in this important group. Confirmation is provided by the Highly Cited Researchers 2019 list of the US Clarivate Analytics, which includes about 6000 researchers from around the world, including ten Portuguese researchers.

According to that list, articles by José Tenreiro Machado of the Higher Institute of Engineering of Porto (ISEP) have been cited 9943 times in the last ten years, each article being cited an average of 276.2 times.

The most cited article (593 times) was the Communication Recent history of fractional calculus published in Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation (March, 2011). The presence of the researcher in this list is very important, as it is a recognition of the quality and international impact of science made at the Polytechnic of Porto.

Graduate in Electrical Engineering and doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Tenreiro Machado has an enviable professional and academic curriculum. The researcher has long been devoting part of his life to ISEP and currently holds the position of Principal Coordinating Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The list recognizes researchers who demonstrate significant authority in one or more scientific categories, determined through the publication of the most cited articles by their peers over the past decade. A “highly cited” researcher is much more than “the author of a highly cited article". It represents exceptional ancestry in a given scientific field.

In 2018, the Cross Field category was added, which identifies researchers with significant authority in various fields over a given period (2008-2018). José Tenreiro Machado falls into this interdisciplinary category.

The ranking is dominated by scientists from China, the US and the UK and includes 23 Nobel Prizes (including three laureates in 2019).
